Ship Attacks: common questions

Who is attacking ships in the Red Sea?

Yemen’s Houthi movement has attacked merchant ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden since November 2023, saying it acts over the war in Gaza. Each attack reported in the last 90 days is listed above, with who is blamed.

What is UKMTO?

UK Maritime Trade Operations, a Royal Navy centre that takes reports from ships and issues security warnings for the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Gulf and the Indian Ocean.

Are ships still attacked in the Black Sea?

Ships and ports have been hit by drones, missiles and mines in the Black Sea since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Any reported in the last 90 days are listed above.

Why are some attacks missing?

Not every incident reaches the news, and some warnings name no ship. This page lists what is reported, not every incident at sea.

How is this tracker made?

Every five minutes the server reads news searches. An AI model (Claude Haiku) keeps only reports of real incidents, translates the headline and names the target and place. Reports on the same target are grouped into one card. The AI can be wrong, so every report links to its publisher.
