Russian Military Near the UK: common questions

How often does the Royal Navy shadow Russian ships?

Often. The Royal Navy escorts Russian warships through the Channel and the North Sea, and the RAF sends Typhoons from Lossiemouth and Coningsby to meet Russian aircraft near UK airspace. Every case reported in the last 90 days is listed above.

Do Russian planes enter UK airspace?

Usually not. Russian aircraft normally fly in international airspace near the UK, inside the area the RAF polices but outside UK sovereign airspace. RAF jets meet them to identify and escort them.

What is the Yantar?

A Russian ship the UK government describes as a spy ship used to map undersea cables. In November 2025 the Defence Secretary said its crew had pointed lasers at RAF pilots watching it.

What is the shadow fleet?

Old tankers, often with unclear owners and insurance, that carry Russian oil around sanctions. Some have been accused of damaging undersea cables, and the Royal Navy now tracks them through UK waters.

How is this tracker made?

Every five minutes the server reads news searches. An AI model (Claude Haiku) keeps only reports of real incidents, translates the headline and names the target and place. Reports on the same target are grouped into one card. The AI can be wrong, so every report links to its publisher.
