RADIATION.
NEAR NUCLEAR PLANTS.
Live radiation readings from Safecast’s open network of volunteer Geiger counters, with the nearest sensor to each nuclear plant in Ukraine, Russia, Japan and the UK, updated every ten minutes. See also nuclear weapons by country and civil defence.

Where the readings come from
Radiation near nuclear plants: common questions
Is radiation rising at Zaporizhzhia?
The table shows the latest reading from the nearest live sensor to each plant, with how far away it is and when it reported. A rise at one sensor can be a fault; the UN’s nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, reports on the plant’s safety.
What is a normal radiation level?
Natural background radiation is usually about 0.05 to 0.3 microsieverts an hour (µSv/h), depending on the rocks and altitude. Readings inside the Chernobyl and Fukushima exclusion zones are higher, as the map shows.
Where do these readings come from?
From Safecast, a volunteer network of Geiger counters that publishes its data openly. The sensors are not official monitoring stations and their readings are not checked before they appear.
Why are there no readings near UK plants?
Safecast has no live sensors near Sizewell, Hinkley Point or Sellafield. The UK’s official network, RIMNET, does not publish live readings.
How often is this page updated?
The server fetches every sensor’s latest reading every ten minutes. Sensors report every few minutes to every half hour.
