Coups, martial law and emergency rule, as reported
Coups and Martial Law: common questions
Has there been a coup recently?
Any coup, coup attempt or mutiny reported in the last 90 days has a card above, newest first, with its sources.
What is the difference between martial law and a state of emergency?
Under martial law the military takes over powers normally held by civilian government and courts. A state of emergency gives the civilian government extra powers for a time, such as banning protests or imposing curfews.
Which countries are under emergency rule now?
Countries with a state of emergency, martial law or curfew reported in the last 90 days are shaded on the map. A card shows the latest report, which may say the measure was lifted.
Does this include natural disasters?
No. Emergencies declared only for floods, storms, fires or health are left out; this page covers unrest, war and security.
How is this tracker made?
Every five minutes the server reads news searches. An AI model (Claude Haiku) keeps only reports of real incidents, translates the headline and names the target and place. Reports on the same target are grouped into one card. The AI can be wrong, so every report links to its publisher.
