HOW THIS WORKS

A map of reporting.

This local monitor reads public publisher RSS feeds and a UK-edition Google News search feed every five minutes. Coverage starts on 1 October 2026 and continues onwards. Matching reports are saved locally across restarts and remain available for replay. The reader collects while the local server is running, even with the page closed. National and regional publisher feeds plus a UK-edition Google News search feed are checked for riot/disorder, clashes, suspected arson, looting, protest arrests and court follow-ups. The category filter keeps these distinct. Keyword matches are not independent verification.

Earlier this month and live updates

Selected, source-linked October articles supplement the live feeds. Multiple publishers may cover one event, so article totals are not unique incident totals. The backfill is limited; live RSS feeds cannot recover all earlier articles. No reports published before 1 October 2026 are shown.

MapLibre + OpenFreeMap

The interactive dark map uses the same MapLibre/OpenFreeMap basemap as France Riot Map, with streets, place labels and geographic zoom. Map tiles are requested from OpenFreeMap; see its privacy policy and terms. Marker colour and size represent matching article volume, not incident totals or severity. Select a marker to open its location feed; the other markers stay available. Most points are approximate city centres. A separate named-place marker appears only when a report names a recognised place; its point identifies the named feature, not an independently verified incident coordinate. Reports without a recognised city remain in the wire. Cards explain the keyword match that brought each article into the feed. Feed health is available from Feed status. Map points show places mentioned in reports, not verified incident locations.

Public social posts

Public Bluesky, YouTube and Reddit posts appear alongside publisher reports in the main wire. Only topic-matching posts published since 1 October are saved. Social posts are excluded from article totals, map pins and replay. A channel’s presence does not verify its claims; r/policeuk is a community, not an official police account. X posts are not collected without an API connection. Feed access may fail or provide only a short recent window.

Political reviews

Where an outlet-level classification is available, cards show it on a large Left–Centre–Right scale and attribute the named review source. Tentative, qualified and provisional labels remain marked, with their qualification available from the scale tooltip. These are assessments of an outlet's overall editorial position, not judgements of an individual article, factual accuracy or a social post. Police and unlisted sources remain Unrated rather than receiving a guessed position.

Read the map with context

These are publisher reports, not independently verified incidents. Articles can cover court cases, commentary or historical events. Obvious foreign-only headlines are filtered, but automated location/context matching can still be wrong. Arrests and charges are allegations, not convictions. A UK news feed does not guarantee a UK incident. The “Why included?” note describes the keyword rule, not a judgement that the event is verified or that it qualifies as a riot.

City pins are approximate mentions, and a city may be background context. Named-place pins only identify the feature described in an article. One article may appear at both its city marker and named-place point; national report totals still count it once. Reports without a recognised city stay in the national wire. This is a limited feed sample, not a complete incident record.

Replay follows article publication dates/times. Selected backfill with no recorded exact publication time uses the start of that London calendar day for ordering and displays the date only. When a feed fails, saved feed reports are marked accordingly. Publisher thumbnails load directly from approved publisher image hosts when present.

About the UK Riot Map

A live map of UK riot and public-order reporting

UK Riot Map brings source-linked national and regional news reports together with a map and searchable news wire. Browse reporting about riots and disorder, clashes, violent protests, arson, looting and protest arrests across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

How the map and news wire work

Publisher feeds are checked every five minutes while the local monitor is running. Matching reports are retained for the coverage period shown in the timeline. The map groups articles by places they mention; city markers are approximate city-centre references, not verified incident coordinates. Reports with no recognised place remain in the news wire.

Read reports with context

Each card links to its publisher and identifies the category that matched. A keyword match is not independent verification that an event happened or qualifies as a riot. Article totals count reports, not unique incidents or severity. Publication time is separate from the time an incident occurred. Public social posts are source claims and are kept distinct from publisher reporting.

Coverage is a limited feed sample, not a complete incident record. Multiple publishers may report the same event, while feeds can be unavailable or omit older stories.
