Countries with fewer than 1,000 refugees abroad are left out of the table and map.
The table above is sorted by refugees from each country. In UNHCR’s end-2025 figures Ukraine, Syria, Sudan and Afghanistan had the most people who had fled abroad as refugees.
The total at the top of the page is UNHCR’s count of refugees for the latest year. It does not include people displaced inside their own country.
An asylum seeker has asked for protection and is waiting for a decision. A refugee has been recognised as needing protection, or is in a refugee-like situation.
UNHCR counts most Venezuelans abroad as other people in need of international protection, a separate category from refugees, so they are not in these figures.
UNHCR publishes end-of-year figures in the middle of the following year. This page checks its API daily and shows the latest year available.
